Carl Patterson and his wife Denise have raised tobacco for 30 years. Mr. Patterson is a full time farmer who is leading alternative enterprise development in our region. He is in his second year of investing in the start up capital for Boar goat herd production in order to fully transition out of tobacco. In 2005, Mr. Patterson converted his tobacco barn into a breeding facility for goats.

Expected income over a two year period - $11,000

Because of this grant "I will not grow tobacco again, instead, I will continue trying to develop a quality herd of full-blood Boar goats and help promote other farmers transition."

With the full support and assistance from his local Cooperative Extension Agriculture Agent Randy Collins, this demonstration project has a lot of potential to serve other farmers.
