Because of this grant "I will be able to cover the transitional start up costs from tobacco to the propagation of native nursery plants."

- David Bodford
Yancey County

David Bodford is a part time farmer who has grown tobacco in the past along with variety of vegetables and Christmas trees. After experimenting and learning about the production of native shrubs and nursery plants with Harold Buchanan, a 2004 grant recipient, Mr. Bodford is raising native rhododendron, azalea and mountain laurel to meet local demand. Mr. Bodford plans to produce flats and mature plants for whole and retail sale.

Expected income in the next two years is $18,000.

David Bodford is working closely with his NC Cooperative Extension Agent.
