Because of this grant "I will be able to invest in a viable alternative crop that should perform well in my old tobacco field and attract area customers."

- Jerry Ellison
Watauga County

Jerry Ellison is a part time farmer who has grown tobacco for 25 years and is looking for alternative income after the tobacco buy-out. Mr. Ellison is converting 1 acre of tobacco land into a commercial production for jack-o-lantern pumpkins. 'Pick Your Own' businesses have gained significant popularity in the region during the past several years. Transitioning from tobacco production to hosting tourists requires new facilities and a new marketing plan for Mr. Ellison.

In the next 2 years Mr. Ellison plans to generate $4,300.

With the support of his NC Cooperative Extension agriculture agent, Frank Bolick, Mr. Ellison will create income in a new market.
