Kevin Duckett has been raising tobacco on his family’s land for eighteen years with this father and brother. Mr. Duckett has worked to diversify the farm income by raising cattle, hay and corn. He is now looking at raising ornamental trees to supply area landscapers. With the advice of a local landscaper, Mr. Duckett has converted 0.5 acres of his land to raise 7 varieties of ornamental trees.

As the 500 ornamental trees mature in three to five years, income is expected to replace lost income from tobacco.

Mr. Duckett’s project demonstrates how partnerships with local businesses and the NC Cooperative Extension create promising potential for agricultural economic development.
