"With the tobacco program terminated, I have lost income that was very important to the family farm. Because of this grant I will be able to pay for farm operation costs to transition into small fruits and vegetables."

- Owen Spry
Avery County

Owen Spry has raised tobacco twenty-six years in addition to raising cattle, Christmas trees and hay. In order to diversify his farm income Mr. Spry has planted small fruits and vegetables to sell along the major highway that runs through his farm. With help from his local NC Cooperative Extension agent, Mr. Spry will provide a source of farm fresh fruit and vegetables for everyone in the community at a reasonable cost.

Expected income from this project in next two years is $24,000.

Owen Spry is working closely with his NC Cooperative Extension Agent, Jerry Moody.
