Richard Reece is a full time farmer who grew up raising tobacco and cattle. Richard is raising high quality heirloom tomatoes along with his commercial tomato production to diversify his income and support local markets. With support from the NC Cooperative Extension 2004 Agriculture Options and Crop Diversification Program, Richard has transitioned completely out of tobacco and estimates selling 500 boxes of heirloom tomatoes in 2005.

Expected income from this project in the next 2 years is $16,000.

Because of this grant "I will be able to develop a market for heirloom tomatoes and increase my cash flow to help offset my loss of tobacco quota."
