Stevie Roberts and his wife Kay have been tobacco farmers for 42 years. The family has used the tobacco income to pay for the land and raise their three children. In looking for alternative agricultural businesses ventures to replace tobacco income, they have created a long range plan to breed registered and trained colts. The WNC Ag Options grant program is helping share the costs for converting their tobacco barn into horse stables with a birthing room and wash/groom area.
Expected income in 2005 is $6,000 for sale of one horse and feed.
