Value-Added Processing; Season Extension; Fruits & Vegetables

Annie Perkinson, co-owner of Flying Cloud Farm in Buncombe County, is using the shared-use commercial equipment of Blue Ridge Food Ventures, an initiative of the Advantage West Economic Development Group, to process her strawberries, tomatoes and peppers into jams, juice and relishes.

She expects to sell her value-added products to generate income in the winter.

"My husband Isaiah and I want to move from being part-time to full-time farmers," Annie said. "That means extending the season so we can have a year-round income. The AgOptions grant gave me the push I need to get the project started."
