Fruits & Vegetables; U-Pick Farm

With the help of the grant, Chad Calhoun of Mitchell County is encouraging his family's multi-generational tradition of farming to continue.

He is establishing a U-Pick strawberry operation with the assistance of his two daughters, since they are interested in growing the fruit. He is transitioning from growing tobacco, his major crop since 1993.

"I have been involved in farming my entire life," Chad said. "I grew up with my grandfather as a farmer. I would love to continue the tradition with my family."
