Fred Treadway

Mushroom Fruiting Hothouse - $3,000

Fred has farmed all his life, and grew tobacco through 2000. At his wife's family farm, he currently produces one acre of vegetables and one acre of mushrooms, which he transitioned to in 2000 to replace tobacco income. With his award, he will build a fruiting house that has heat, fans and an automatic misting system to ensure proper growing climate.

The house will increase the production time for growing mushrooms, and ultimately his market share and customer base. The increased efficiency of his operation will free time for him to work on other farm projects.
