$3,000 — Potato Production
David is growing one acre of Kennebec potatoes as he diversifies out of tobacco production. He produces yields as high as 375 to 400 bushels per acre, well above the estimates given in N.C. State University enterprise budgets.
The workload to grow potatoes is significantly lower than tobacco production. David expects to double his acre net income on potatoes compared to tobacco.
In 2011, the small Bauladean community of five potato growers sold approximately $40,000 of Kennebecs directly from the farms. The high customer demand for these superior quality potatoes is still not met. In the past, David’s potatoes sold out in September.
David grew burley tobacco from 1974 to 2011. He sells potatoes directly to customers and to local produce stands.
