Livestock Scales and Shelter
Grant Award: $6,000
Rusty is increasing the efficiency and profitability of his cattle farm with the addition of livestock scales and a shelter. Instead of hauling his cattle to be weighed at three different life stages, Rusty can take the measurements on farm, saving him a lot of time.
Weighing the animals is critical to monitor the breeding program, feeding, animal health and cow performance, Rusty said. He also expects that the 30-foot by 40-foot three-sided shelter, which reduces weather stress, will decrease the number of sick calves and hence antibiotic requirements.
“With these items we can accomplish our goal of quality animals that fellow producers can buy and have success with,” Rusty said. The data he collects helps show his customers he has animal breeding stock that meets their needs.
With more than 20 years in the business, Rusty mainly relies on repeat customers. He also meets new contacts exhibiting his cattle at the N.C. State Fair.
