During the last few years, Vera Guise purchased land that used to be in her family’s hands and turned it into Appalachian Homestead, a non-profit organization and educational farm.

With the grant funds, she is establishing a demonstration field of diverse crops to teach summer youth campers about traditional mountain homesteading. By reviving the mountains’ traditions, Vera hopes to inspire more locals to be small plot farmers.

"The grant made it possible to do the gardens," Vera said. "Otherwise we couldn’t have done it — the land had to be cleared with a machine since the rocks were so huge."
